Vampire Facelift-What Should You Know?

A Vampire Facelift is a non-surgical, non-invasive cosmetic procedure where a gel-like substance is derived from a person’s blood and then, injected back into different areas to remove wrinkles. In this procedure, the gel is derived from one’s blood, which is a Platelet Rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM) or blood plasma enriched with platelets. It is then activated using calcium chloride or thrombin, which changes its consistency to the gel-like substance that’s injected. There are both commercial and non-commercial ways to isolate PRFM, which is used in a Vampire Facelift. This facelift procedure was made famous by Kim Kadarashian, though many celebrities use this procedure before a red carpet appearance.

Vampire Facelift is popularly called ‘fountain of youth’ and is considered a way to retain youthful looks longer. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers help restore volume and shape to one’s skin and improve skin tone and texture. Generally, hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane or Juvederm are used to add volume. Then, the blood of the patient is cultured to derive the growth factors needed. They’re then activated and injected, to create new tissues, blood vessels, and fatty tissues, for a fuller and more youthful look.

Though not approved by the FDA, doctors say it is not any different from other dermal fillers. One procedure and the results last a good two years, which is attractive for many. Many doctors say that the Vampire Facelift procedure is widely accepted and popular because there are no adverse reactions like that of other dermal fillers. Since the procedure is done using substances derived from one’s blood, allergic reactions, bumps, irregularities, etc. are less likely. Many feel it is OK to inject their blood, instead of chemical dermal fillers.

More research needs to be conducted as to whether the platelet-rich fibrin matrix is indeed the real solution for youthful appearance as herbal extracts do to an extent. PRFM, as the medical experts call the golden-colored gel, does not have scientific backing as a safe dermal filler. However, in Dubai, it isn’t legalized yet. They say it is a new procedure and should be regulated, to prevent misuse or exploitation. As a result, new regulations are being formulated and until they’re through, the Vampire Facelift is not allowed in Dubai. Like every other procedure that’s invented, it is important to scrutinize to identify risks associated with long-term or short-term use.

In a recent incident, one woman reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest during the procedure and was declared dead when taken to hospital. This has given more reasons to worry since many who claim to do the procedure aren’t qualified. This could be due to a lack of understanding of how the procedure should be done, or an aftermath of the procedure itself, though it is yet to be established. With such issues, it is important to regulate cosmetic procedures including the Vampire Facelift to ensure individuals’ health and safety is the priority.
